Just a few weeks ago there were a number of raids which took place in Somerset whereby more
than 300 police officers from local stations went into over 40 scrap metal
yards throughout the local area. To date 25 people have been arrested for being
in possession of stolen goods, as well as carrying out money laundering and
theft.
The police launched their search which comprised of officers, support
groups, and police dogs as well as financial investigators, police officers
from HQ and BT’s investigation team- which was aptly named ‘Operation
Relentless’.
These continuous campaigns give the police force the chance to provide
the general public with a good insight into the operations the police carry out
on a day to day basis- in this case investigating those who steal metal and
handle stolen property.
As a result of the police searches, police offers took the opportunity to
seize a range of goods including cable, copper, road signs and lead flashing,
along with farm gates, machinery and drain covers.
The theft of metal is encountered by people from all walks of life,
including business owners, construction site owners and even homeowners. The total estimated cost of the stealing of
scrap metal is predicted to be around £1 billion pounds every year. Alarmingly,
this figure is set to rise due to the increase in the worth of metal across the
world.
Worryingly it’s not just the monetary loss which is a concern, but when
thieves steal the metal they are also putting other peoples lives in a
significant amount of danger. After an
incident in Somerset
took place whereby a BT cable was stolen along with a nearby manhole and drain
covers there were a series of accidents on the surrounding dark, busy roads as
a result.
In other parts of the country such as Avon and Somerset, thanks to police clamp downs on
metal thieves the number of incidents taking place is significantly lower in
comparison to other locations.
However, a spokesman has said that the police force have not become
complacent despite the improvements due to the increases in scrap metal thefts
across the rest of the country.
They hope that the clampdowns on scrap metal thieves will send a clear
message to criminals and other people handling stolen goods. The police force aims to take ongoing action
in dealing with these people who are reaping financial rewards at the cost of
everyone else in society. They aim to do
this by reducing the market in which these thieves are operating in.
A clear message was also sent to scrap metal dealers who are operating
lawfully, who refuse to handle any stolen goods and who co-operate with their
local police force- in that they have nothing to worry about in regards to the
clamp downs.
